Justice: The Case of the Angel Maker

Justice in the Middle Ages: Midwife executed past in video

(by Nadja Laue)

- A long time ago, when the town of Weissenfels was still very young, a young woman lived in the Bürgermark, all alone.
She had a small, sleepy cottage with an elderberry that formed a hedge around the house and the adjoining garden. | In her garden grew some vegetables and many herbs and spices. - She was very popular with the women in the Bürgermark because she was the midwife.

Although she had no children of her own, she was sensitive and eager to help women.

But one day the bailiff from the city arrived and was supposed to take her to the castle.  She should be kept in prison.

Of course she asked what she was being accused of.
But she received no answer. -
By the early fourteenth century, the role of women was clearly defined.
But the woman from the Bürgermark did not follow the generally applicable rules.  For two weeks she sat in the drafty castle and waited. Then the door to the cell was thrown open.
She jumped up and saw a woman's face. | The guard grabbed her arm and pulled her out of the cell into the hallway. | The lady eyed her, nodded, and the guard pushed her down the aisle. | It started working in her head. | She wondered if she knew this woman. If she had ever stood by this woman.
Had she ever given her any advice?  But she couldn't think of anything.   - The young woman was led into a room and seated at a table.
The city bailiff entered through a second door. | - So you are the ones - he addressed her. - Maybe - the woman replies. - - If I knew which one I should be, why I'm here, I can say if I'm that one. - she replied.

The town bailiff looked at her a bit irritated. - But he wasn't easily deterred.

- I was told that you are the midwife of the Bürgermark. - said the town bailiff. She couldn't possibly deny that. It wasn't necessary. So she nodded.

Then the bailiff got up and left her alone. She sat there - a long - forever long.

Night fell and the security guard gave her a lamp on the table. - Nothing happened, nobody came. And she fell asleep.

As the sun rose, the door was pushed open. A tall man with a mask over his head entered, grabbed her arm roughly and dragged her in front of the tower of the castle. - There she was pushed into the cage of a wagon and the lock was tightly closed.

- - Where am I being taken, what is happening to me? -, she asked. | But she received no answer. The carriage, in front of which ran a horse, drove to the market.  Here the young woman should now be judged.

But what was she accused of?
She should find out quickly.

| She climbed the three steps onto the platform installed in the market. A rope was tied around her neck.
The town bailiff unrolled a roll of parchment in front of the cheering crowd.
- The midwife Ilsegrin Peters is being judged here today because she killed a large number of children and women. She is an angel maker and therefore to be judged. -  Her eyes widened. Now she realized what had happened. -  Ilsegrin was one of the few women who knew how to perform an abortion. A crime that was severely punished at the time.
Ilsegrin mixed a potion with St. John's root, Sade tree and parsley seeds.
She only administered a few drops of it and stayed with the women.
The bleeding that set in provided her with cold water and chaste tree. | None of the women were harmed. But one of the husbands reported her. It was a murder of the unborn. | And two wives could no longer have children after the gift of a white herb. - (The women didn't mind. They usually had ten or more children at home.) | The husbands, however, found it strange that the wives no longer became pregnant.

Contraception was forbidden and condemned by the Church.

Judging the midwife was a logical consequence.

Despite protests from the women gathered in the market, Ilsegrin was hanged.
